Imperial Nylon PA12 Tubing: A Less Common Choice in the UK

While metric reigns supreme in the UK, imperial nylon PA12 tubing still holds a niche position in certain American equipment and legacy systems. Let's delve into its unique characteristics and explore where it might come in handy across the pond.

What is it?

Imagine a flexible, high-performance plastic straw, but sturdier and ready for industrial tasks. That's essentially what imperial nylon PA12 tubing is. Made from polyamide 12, it boasts impressive qualities like:

  • Durability: Withstands high pressure, abrasion, and even harsh chemicals.
  • Temperature Resilience: Adapts to a wide range, from freezing -40°C to scorching 120°C.
  • Lightweight: Easier to handle and install compared to metal alternatives.
  • Flexibility: Bends and maneuvers around corners without kinking or cracking.

Why not as popular in the UK?

The metric system's widespread adoption in the UK makes imperial-sized components, like this tubing, less common. Additionally, readily available metric alternatives from European manufacturers often cater to local needs and preferences.

Where might it be useful?

Despite its limited presence, imperial nylon PA12 tubing can be invaluable in specific situations:

  • Maintaining American machinery: If your workshop houses equipment imported from the US, this tubing might be the perfect replacement part to keep things running smoothly.
  • Adapting to existing imperial systems: In older facilities with imperial-based setups, this tubing can seamlessly integrate with current infrastructure.
  • Sourcing specific properties: If you require a combination of features like high-pressure tolerance, chemical resistance, and flexibility within the imperial sizing system, this tubing could be your best bet.

Think of it as a specialist: While not the go-to choice for most UK applications, imperial nylon PA12 tubing fills a vital niche for specific needs. Its robustness, adaptability, and compatibility with American equipment make it a valuable asset in certain situations.

Remember: When considering imperial nylon PA12 tubing, prioritise compatibility with your existing systems and ensure it aligns with relevant safety regulations.

There are a few sizes that are very close to metric sizes : - 5/32 = 3.97mm (4mm) 5/16 = 7.94mm(8mm) & 5/8 = 15.88mm(16mm)
